Dave Head Mathematics

Course Description:
This is a course in precalculus and statistics, designed to prepare students to enter college at the calculus level. It includes rational, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions; basic trigonometric identities and the laws of sines and cosines; sequences and series; vectors; the central limit theorem and confidence intervals. (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Mathematics 3 or Accelerated Mathematics 2.) Please visit the Department of Education website (www.doe.k12.ga.us) or the Instruction page found on the Gainesville City Schools website (www.gcssk12.net ) to view the state standards and our pacing guides in further detail.

Standards:
MM4A1. Students will explore rational functions.
MM4A2. Students will use the circle to define the trigonometric functions.
MM4A3. Students will investigate and use the graphs of the six trigonometric functions.
MM4A4. Students will investigate functions.
MM4A5. Students will establish the identities below and use them to simplify trigonometric expressions and verify equivalence statements.
MM4A6. Students will solve trigonometric equations both graphically and algebraically.
MM4A7. Students will verify and apply formulas to find the area of a triangle.
MM4A8. Students will investigate and use inverse sine, inverse cosine, and inverse tangent functions.
MM4A9. Students will use sequences and series.
MM4A10. Students will understand and use vectors.
MM4D1. Using simulation, students will develop the idea of the central limit theorem.
MM4D2. Using student-generated data from random samples of at least 30 members, students will determine the margin of error and confidence.

Materials:
We engage in mathematics not only for its application but also for its beauty. Together, we will become skilled Mathematicians as well as confident problem solvers. As we study the mathematical content in this course, let’s always be asking questions like “Why?” ‘What if?” “Always?”  After all, new ideas and inventions come from just such questions!

Here are the items I expect you to bring to class every day.
1.  A 3-ring binder (no spiral notebooks, please) with the following in it:
- One Pencil Pouch with the following items:
        - Writing Utensils: of at least two different colors (pens, pencils, markers… your favorite) Note: You may use a pen or pencil on all assignments.
        - Mathematics Tools: Calculator We will NOT have classroom sets of calculators. You MUST purchase one. (I recommend a Casio fx-300ES  Natural Display. It will be available for purchase in room 201.)
- Syllabus, blank notebook paper and graph paper
- Notes & Classwork
- Vocabulary
- Homework - Including your student assignments book
- Tests, Quizzes and Projects
2. Your Textbook

Grading Policy: As defined by a school wide policy for course grading, final grades for each semester will be calculated using the following percentages
Course grades will be calculated based on the following rubric:
      Final Grade – 35% Daily Grades & 45% Test Grades & 20% Final Exam
Grading Procedures
Quizzes -       Quizzes are given once or twice a week.
            -       The lowest quiz grade for the semester will be dropped.
Tests -       One test for each unit
            -       To ensure that everyone has adequate time to complete the tests, testing will begin at the beginning of class.
            -       There will be no talking while tests are in progress, even if you have completed your test! If you choose to talk, disciplinary action will be taken. This is about honoring your classmates’ time.

Homework will be done daily, you are responsible to find out what it is if you are absent, ask a student or email me.
-       Any homework assignments missed due to an excused absence must be made up in accordance with the Gainesville High School policy as stated in the handbook.

Make Up Policy -       It is your responsibility to find out what you missed while you were absent!! You may ask another student, ask Mr. Head before or after class/school, or e-mail Mr. Head… Please do not say “I didn’t know we had an assignment.”
-       You will have two days to make up work for every day missed.

Rules/Procedures
ID’s are worn during the school day (including my class time) at all times.
Cell phones/electronic devices are NOT permitted during class periods.
NO hats are permitted to be worn in the school building.
Be prompt, prepared, productive, polite at all times

Time Outside of Class Please communicate with me as soon as possible if you are having trouble managing your time or if you find you are spending significantly more than 30 minutes an evening. I truly want to help you get the most out of this course you can.
