Dave Head Mathematics

Course Description:  AP Statistics involves the study of four main areas: exploratory analysis, planning a study, probability, and statistical inference.  These areas of study are intended to give students a deeper understanding of statistical analysis.  This course will concentrate on realistic examples and the problems that arise in them.  Graphical displays will include boxplots, dotplots, stemplots, histograms, and bar charts.  Students will develop the skills needed to effectively communicate statistical methods, results, and interpretations.

There will be two projects during the semester.  One due at midterm and the other presented after the AP Exam.  Projects are assigned to ensure that the students learn how to communicate methods, results, and interpretations using statistical vocabulary.

                                                !VERY IMPORTANT!
I understand that the drop/add period for all Honors and AP courses is the first 10 days of the semester. All students will transfer to the next lower level with a grade of 60 or their current grade, whichever is higher. I understand that a schedule change will only be permitted if a course has space available.

If an AP course does not have a complementary Honors or College Prep level available, the student will be moved to an elective course. I understand that my son/daughter is responsible for all make up work in the new course. I further understand that a schedule change will only be permitted if an elective course is available during the given period.

Other Course material

All students will have a personal or school issued graphing Calculator (TI–83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84, or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition) for use in class, at home, and on the AP Exam.  Students are required to use their calculators throughout the course to become familiar with the keystrokes and underlying operations of the calculator.

In addition, students will have periodic access to the Computer lab to use mini-tab software to aid in graphing, problem solving, and to run computer simulations.

All students will have a CD provided with the primary text book that contains data sets and applets for use during the course.
