Dave Head Mathematics

Course Description

This is the second in the sequence of secondary mathematics courses designed to ensure that students are college and work ready. This course requires students to:  represent and operate with complex numbers; use numerical, graphical, and algebraic techniques to explore quadratic, exponential, and  piecewise functions and to solve quadratic, exponential and absolute value equations and inequalities; use algebraic models to represent and explore real phenomena; explore inverses of functions; use right triangle trigonometry to formulate and solve problems; discover, justify and apply properties of circles and spheres; use sample data to make informal inferences about population means and standard deviations; and fit curves to data and examine the issues related to curve fitting. Please visit the Department of Education website (www.doe.k12.ga.us) to view the state standards and pacing guides in further detail.

Standards Addressed
MM2N1. Students will represent and operate with complex numbers.
MM2A1. Students will investigate step and piecewise functions, including greatest integer and absolute value functions.
MM2A2. Students will explore exponential functions.
MM2A3. Students will analyze quadratic functions in the forms f(x) = ax2 + bx + c and f(x) = a(x – h)2 + k.
MM2A4. Students will solve quadratic equations and inequalities in one variable.
MM2A5. Students will explore inverses of functions.
MM2G1. Students will identify and use special right triangles.
MM2G2. Students will define and apply sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to right triangles.
MM2G3. Students will understand the properties of circles.
MM2G4. Students will find and compare the measures of spheres.
MM2D1: Using sample data, students will make informal inferences about population means and standard deviations
MM2D2. Students will determine an algebraic model to quantify the association between two quantitative variables.

Materials
Here are the items I expect you to bring to class every day.
1.       A 3-ring binder (no spiral notebooks, please) with the following 4 sections
- Pencil Pouch with the following items:  Writing Utensils: of at least two different colors (pens, pencils, markers… your favorite) Note: You may use a pen or pencil on all assignments.  Mathematics Tools: Ruler, compass & calculator. I recommend the Casio fx-300 Natural Display scientific calculator.  @@ - - Calculators will not be provided! @@
- Assignment Sheet, Syllabus, Standards, blank notebook paper and graph paper
- Notes, Class work, Vocabulary, & Homework
- Tests, Quizzes and Projects
2. Your Student Text and Student Assignment Book

Grading Policy As defined by a school wide policy for course grading, final grades for each semester will be calculated using the following percentages:

35% Daily Grades
45% Test Grades
20% EOCT

Late work for a unit will be accepted for half credit at any time prior to the unit test. Any homework assignments missed must be made up within 3 school days. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed while you were absent!! You may ask another student, ask Mr. Head before or after class, e-mail Mr. Alvarez or a classmate. Please, do not say “I didn’t know we had an assignment.”

Make Up Policy
You will have two days to make up work for every day missed.  Special circumstances may warrant teacher or administrator discretion for allowing different arrangements.

Grading Procedures
Quizzes              Quizzes are given once or twice a week. Quizzes are usually announced.
Tests                  One test for each unit, it will contain material from previous units! To ensure that everyone has adequate time to complete the tests, testing will begin at the beginning of class.  There will be no talking while tests are in progress, even if you have completed your test! If you choose to talk, disciplinary action will be taken. This is about honoring your classmates’ time.

It is mandatory that the math I or math II EOCT is passed. Otherwise, a Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) for that content area must be taken and passed.

Rules/Procedures
1.       Be on time and in your seat ready to go when the bell goes off.
2.       Be prepared, start working on the warm up or have questions from homework ready.
3.       Be polite, treat others as you wish to be treated.  Watch your language!
4.       ID’s are to be worn during the school day INCLUDING during my CLASS
5.       Cell phones/electronic devices are NOT permitted during CLASS.
6.       Hats are not to be worn in the school building this includes the HALLS!
